David is the Clinical Director for Gastrointestinal, Emergency, Urology, and Vascular Surgery at the Royal Devon University Hospital Trust, which includes both North Devon District Hospital and Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. With a workforce of 15,000 staff, the Trust is a key healthcare provider in the region, delivering high-quality care across a wide range of specialties. David established and developed the Upper GI Surgery and Abdominal Wall Services in North Devon, both of which are nationally recognised for their excellence in care. The tertiary abdominal wall service, one of the largest in the South of England, handles approximately 100 out-of-area referrals annually. David is an Honorary Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Exeter, where he contributes to academic teaching and research in surgical practice. He is also the immediate past president of the British Hernia Society. His expertise spans multiple specialties, with specialty laparoscopic upper GI training in the South West of England and a trauma fellowship in South Africa. He holds a doctorate focused on the influence of mesh and fixation techniques on infection in abdominal wall hernia repair, with over 100 publications in hernia surgery and several book chapters. As an internationally recognised expert, he regularly delivers invited lectures on these topics both nationally and internationally. David has been instrumental in shaping global standards in hernia surgery. He chaired the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Commissioning Guidance for Groin Hernia and the European Hernia Society's Incisional Hernia Guidelines Group. He also contributed to the development of the RightCare patient decision aid for inguinal hernias and is part of the European working group that developed the Abdominal Wall Closure Guidelines and the International Hernia Guidelines. David is the clinical lead for robotic hernia surgery at the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
